PORTO DEL VENTO, VORIA ROSATO PET-NAT

Perricone Petillant Naturel

Sicily, Italy, NV

The tiny Porta del Vento winery sits 2000 feet above Palermo, near the village of Camporeale, an area of Sicily where nature can be very harsh. At 600m elevation, on incredibly steep slopes, this area is known for constant, brutal winds, blowing through the vineyards. These ever-present winds, along with the large, diurnal, temperature range, allow for wines of great concentration, character, low alcohol and racy acidity. The 100% Certified Organic and Biodynamic wines, which adhere to a strict, non-interventionist approach are produced unfiltered, so as to not deprive them of the elements that make them unique.

The Voria Rosato Pet-Nat is a clean, light sparkling rose with bright flavors of under-ripe strawberries and cherries with  very pleasant notes of wild herbs and minerals.

This is so important because not only does it mean cleaner wines, it means we can enjoy these wines for generations to come. Also, a more sustainable vineyard means less chemicals in your wine! In fact, this clean and fresh rose is a true expression of the fantastic grapes of the region.
This rose is much more subtle on the nose, with light aromas of red fruit and mediterranean herbs. However, on the palate it’s an explosion of raspberries, strawberries and cranberries on a beautifully crisp and dry mouthfeel

FRANK CORNELISSEN, SUSUCARU ROSSO

Nerello Mascalese Field Blend

Mt. Etna, Sicily, 2019

Frank Cornelissen claims that his wines, cultivated from the native grapes high up on the slopes of Mt. Etna, simply make themselves. Yet, the world-class natural wines he produces have shaken the Italian wine industry to its core, as consumers who have sampled his products around the world begin to look South for elegant, ageable, and collectable Italian wines. Many local producers in Sicily count Frank Cornelissen as their number one inspiration as they chase the simplicity of creating wines that fully define a sense of place and character cleanly and without intervention. In reality, Frank is an artisan who has an extreme attention to detail both in his vineyard and in his winery. The perfection of his grapes and winemaking protocols allow him to create truly balanced wines without chemicals or excessive intervention. His wines highlight the incredible minerality and terroir of the tallest active volcano in all of Europe.

The Susucaru Rosso is the perfect summer red wine for our patio! A traditional field blend of native red and white grapes (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Capuccio, Minella Nera, Alicante Bouschet, and Minella Bianco) from the chillier Northern Slope of Mt. Etna, The Susucaru is a light, easy drinking introduction to the elegant, stony red wines cultivated from the volcano.

VINO DI ANNA, PALMENTO ROSSO

Nerello Mascalese Field Blend

Mt. Etna, Sicily, 2019

Vino di Anna is a family owned and operated winery on the north face of the tallest active volcano in all of Europe, Mt. Etna. Anna Martens, with the help of her husband Eric Narioo, farm native Mt. Etna grapes biodynamically with a strong connection to the ancient traditions of the region. Their Palmento Rosso is made from grapes sourced from a mixed vineyard composed mostly of old Nerello Mascalese bush vines, but with other varieties sprinkled throughout, including Nerello Cappuccio, Grenache, and very few white grape varieties such as Grecanico, Catarratto, and Minella Bianca. All of the grapes were hand harvested and processed in a traditional Sicilian Palmento - a cave cut from the volcanic rocks that allow for temperature control while minimizing any mechanical processes. The resulting wine is fresh and lively with bright, juicy flavors of cherry and wild strawberries. The fruit is beautifully balanced by a complex minerality and well-integrated drying tannins.
The light palate and ripe red fruit will pair beautifully with the spice and cheesy decadence of our Caramelized Ricotta Gnocchi!

CANTINA GIARDINO, CLOWN OENOLOGUE

Aglianico

Irpinia, Campania, Italy, 2017

LUKASI, SAPERAVI

Kahketi, Georgia, 2015

The Lukasi Winery in Kahketi Georgia actually got its start just making wine for their family and a close circle of friends. Some of those friends happened to be well known wine connoisseurs, and they were able to talk the family into selling their wine commercially in 2013. It’s a small establishment named after their son Luca, but they quickly gained a reputation for exceptional quality, design, balance and terroir expression. And because their production is so exclusive, they are able to use only the best grapes from their vineyards to produce their wine.
This wine is unique because they made a classic Saperavie wine using French Oak, while many other producers choose concrete, steel, or very old oak barrels. Plummy, dark berries, smooth and refined in the nose with licorice and tar bits at the edges. Leather notes on the palate with a full but refined body, strong acidity and lingering finish. Wonderfully integrated tannins. We aged this wine in-house at one of our local restaurants for a few years to release only when it was tasting absolutely perfect

CHATEAU MUSAR, MUSAR RED

Carignan, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon

Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, 2006

Gaston Hochar founded Chateau Musar as a young man in 1930 when he became enamored with the wines of Bordeaux and discovered that his home country of Lebanon had an ancient tradition of winemaking. He sent his son, Serge Hochar, to the prestigious University of Oenology in Bordeaux where he had the opportunity to study under Emile Peynaud. When his son returned in 1959, he took over Chateau Musar and turned it into a world-renowned producer of Bordeaux-style red wines. In fact, in 1984 Serge was named Man of the Year by Decanter Magazine!
The 2006 is a very special vintage for Chateau Musar, as they had beautifully cool temperatures throughout the growing season, allowing for the grapes to gain a particular elegance in flavor. But right at harvest, Lebanon unexpectedly came under siege! Knowing that they had something truly special in the vineyard that year, they decided to harvest anyway! The resulting wine has a palate full of brambly and hedgerow fruits with blueberries and cherries. It is a mid-weight vintage with excellent acidity and fine tannins.
